One of the greatest Angel Investors of the last 20 years has a simple philosophy around professional fulfillment:
“I firmly believe that professional fulfillment will increasingly be the result of feeling fully utilized.”
His name is Scott Belsky and he has one of the most impressive resumes in all of tech:
- Founder of Behance (Backed by Union Square Ventures, Sold to Adobe)
- Venture Partner at Benchmark Capital
- Investor at capitalB
- Chief Product & Strategy Officer at Adobe
Scott started his career in investment banking before launching his own startup, which he took from ideation to a $150M sale to Adobe. He’s the bestselling author of two books on entrepreneurship. And, he writes a newsletter followed by over 27,000 entrepreneurs, investors, and tech leaders.
If anyone could be considered “fully utilized”, it’s Scott. But, according to him, that’s actually his professional edge and the key to professional fulfillment.
I like that… A lot.
In fact, I think “full utilization” is something to aspire to. Personally, I’ve built a career that allows me to leverage my talents to do the work I enjoy doing most — Angel investing. And it only took me 36 years to find it!
When people ask me where I see myself in 5 years, I always tell them that I hope to be doing the same thing I’m doing today: Meeting interesting people, helping founders, building companies, and writing angel checks.
To do great things, you must find the work that allows you to employ your greatest skills while pushing you to use every part of your brain (and body).
That’s what being fully utilized is all about.
