The best way to build trust with a new founder: Read their pitch deck before getting on the phone.
It’s incredible how many investors have forgotten about this part of the job.
Some investors might glance over the deck before speaking to a founder. Others will assign their Analyst/Associate to read the deck and communicate the main points. Many (more than you think) don’t ask for the deck at all.
Gaining an understanding of the founder’s business - PRIOR to the first call when possible - and asking thoughtful questions, is the easiest way to build trust early on in the relationship.
If you’re an early-stage investor, the bar is so low.
So, before you get on a call with a founder, ask for their deck, then actually read the damn thing.
