Just because you hold a title doesn’t mean you have real influence. This is especially true in venture.
I’ve seen VC Associates who have the same influence as Senior Partners. I’ve been a board observer with as much influence as the actual board members.
Influence doesn’t come from a job title, it comes from mutual respect. And, if you’re an investor, the best way to earn the respect of founders is to provide value:
- Connect them with investors, customers, and potential hires
- Help them prepare for fundraising rounds
- Offer your expertise when appropriate
- Help them navigate the lonely, confusing journey of building a company
Provide as much value as possible, whenever possible, and you’ll earn the respect of the people around you.
Influence is earned, not acquired.
