If you’re a founder, you’re going to get screwed over many, many, many times. Employees might leave you, investors might betray you, and advisors might let you down.
But, the world of tech startups, venture investors, and career operators is a small one. At the end of the day, we’re in the business of building relationships.
In my career, I've seen what happens on both sides of a burned bridge and I can tell you one thing: You’re not judged by the situation. You are judged by your response to it. Your reputation is defined by how you overcome the obstacle.
If you can avoid burning a bridge, do your best to part with someone amicably. This doesn’t mean that you tolerate dishonesty, poor performance, or betrayal. But, you don’t need to destroy the relationship — You never know how a scorned employee or investor may re-enter your life years down the road.
Like everything else in life, it’s not about what happens. It’s about how you handle it.
