Founder Friday is a content series from SuperAngel.Fund highlighting companies in our portfolio and the inspiring founders behind them.
In our 25th edition we are featuring Reza Khadjavi, Co-Founder & CEO of Motion, a creative analytics platform that helps creative teams become more data-driven and quantify the impact of their work.
Generally speaking, marketers are comfortable working with data, while creatives tend to be more comfortable working with visuals. Because of the opposing nature of these workflows, it can be difficult to collaborate with each other. Motion’s vision is to bridge the gap, becoming the operating system for Creative Strategists, to make optimal data-driven AND creative decisions.
Motion makes it easy to identify key drivers of creative performance and share learnings through visual reports to help teams generate more revenue from paid social. With the competition for attention at all-time highs across platforms like Instagram, Snap, and TikTok, it is more important than ever for marketers to optimize their ad creatives.
The founding team, comprised of Reza Khadjavi (CEO), Alex Sloan (CTO), and early Motion employees, previously worked together at Shoelace, a growth marketing agency. Below, we dive deeper with Reza to learn how he scaled Motion to more than 200 paying customers, including, some of the most well respected brands and agency partners like Vouri, Keeps, Caraway, Therabody, Cuts Clothing, VaynerCommerce, Tinuiti, Wpromote, Good Moose, and others…most of which signed up via organic word-of-mouth.
Sound like the type of team you would want to work for? Good news: they’re hiring!
Describe your company in 5 words or less.
Reza: Helping creative teams become data-driven.
What was your primary motivation for starting your business?
Reza: There is a major gap between performance and brand. One side is data driven and the other is visual. Most companies have a hard time merging these two worlds, but we think we can help.
What piece of advice would you give an entrepreneur starting a business today?
Reza: Be obsessed about your customer's problems, not your own ideas.
What do you love to do in your free time?
Reza: Spend time in nature.
What is the most interesting place you’ve visited recently and why?
Reza: Torrance Barrens, a dark sky preserve that's a couple hours north of Toronto. It gets pitch dark with unbelievable views of the night sky.
What is your favorite app or tool in your work life and in your personal life?
Reza: I recently started using Google Tasks in my Google Calendar workflow. I love being able to see my meetings and to-dos for the week all in one place.
What do you believe is the most important skill or attribute of a successful founder?
Reza: The ability to be extreme in contradicting ways. E.g unreasonably optimistic but brutally pragmatic when required.
