Critical advice from Lindel Eakman, Partner at Foundry Capital: Investing will always hinge on experience, relationships, and instinct. Here’s what he has to say…
While talking with Samir Kaji on the Venture Unlocked podcast, Lindel shared several of his most important learnings from investing in both founders and other funds.
A few that stood out the most to me:
1. Venture is a qualitative business
"I think this is a qualitative business. By the time you have the quantitative data it is often too late or not relevant."
2. Partnership risk is much bigger than most people realize
"The biggest risk to emerging managers is partnership risk. It's a reason I've come around totally to investing in Solo GPs rather than partnerships."
3. Emerging managers produce better returns because they’re willing to take more risk
"I would do a bunch of emerging managers because the data shows (and I know) that you get rewarded for taking risks in Fund I and Fund IIs. I would definitely go build more exposure there."
I highly recommend you take a few hours this weekend to sit down, listen to this discussion, and take thorough notes.
You know what to do!
